Trade it in and get one with an AC might be easier.

Hi Katie,

I think you (and I) may be out of luck. I also bought a pure (in May 2008) as an orphan. Whoever ordered it originally had specified zero options above base level. No radio, no A/C...nada. It was the only orphan available at the time at smart center Pittsburgh (during those initial months when smart was sellin' em like hotcakes). I wasn't keen on the likely 12-to-18 month wait, so I sprang for it. I personally don't care all that much about the lack of A/C, which is why I went ahead and bought it, but it turns out my wife will not ride in it if the outside temperature is anywhere north of around 68 to 70 degrees F. Unfortunately, it seems that the only practical way to get an A/C unit into a smart is to have one installed at the factory at the time of assembly (having the car sufficiently disassembled now to add A/C is technically possible I suppose, but hardly realistic financially). I checked smart center where I bought the car about a possible trade-in for a unit with A/C, but their proposed deal was not acceptable. smarttask may feel that a trade-in is the most "inexpensive" way to go, but I am not willing to pay an additional $5000 to basically get an air conditioner. I listed the car I have on Craig's List to try that route, but I got zero inquiries. So...like you, I guess I will be making use of the window cranks.

I am sorry but for me if you want AC you should sell your 2008 pure and buy a new Smart with AC. In the long run it would be the most inexpensive way to go.

I had an Imperial speedo put in to the smart, but it is still reading in kms. There is an electronic flash that is supposed to change it to read the proper MPH from what I understand.

I'm curious... and in Australia with a fully Metric smart. And confused by your question. The Imperial units (USA) speedo has a face plate calibrated 0 to 100 mph The Metric units speedo has a face plate calibrated 0 to 160 kph. You have a speedo…
