0W40 Mobil ! Synthetic oil
Fram has an oil filter available for the 2008 Smart=PH6607
If hitch is in back of the filter, it will certainly protect it while backing up, but not while moving forward.

So a bit bigger, and I would like to add that I have installed a Hitch on my SMART, and the hitch does a great job of protecting the oil filter, motor, and other bits. So, if the bigger filter concerns you, put a hitch on.
