Fractured front windscreen

This morning I got in my car only to discover a crack in the front windscreen that I'm surw wasn't there when I parked last night. The crack has no star marks and have checked with a colleague who belives it to be a stress fracture. It looks like a line starting at the bottom of the left side of the window goes up about 4 inches, curves right and does straight for about 6 inches under the wipper blades. Is this a known issue and would this be covered by the manufacturer warranty? I bought the car from a Smart main dealer.
