I have a noticable mpg improvement with the narrower rear tires. The car feels a bit more skittish but i got used to it. I'm running 45 psi all around. Pulled the trailer 500 miles with a load. No problem. By the way, you state that the rear…

My Response to the Cynicism of the Editors of Automobile Magazine

LAST JULY, AUTOMOBILE MAGAZINE, WHICH I HAVE READ FOR YEARS AND HIGHLY RESPECT, RAN A SERIES OF OPINIONS BY ITS STAFFERS ON THE U.S. INTRODUCTION OF THE SMART CAR. SIX MONTHS LATER, I RECEIVED A SMART FORTWO PURE COUPE AND PUT OVER A THOUSAND MILES ON IT IN A WEEK, DRIVING CROWDED LOS ANGELES FREEWAYS AND RURAL HIGHWAYS. THE FOLLOWING IS MY POINT BY POINT RESPONSE (IN CAPS).

Personally, I think they're smoking their own ear wax to believe they can… Continue

The Key to High Mileage: Understanding the Smart transmission

The biggest key to high mileage in the Smart is probably understanding the transmission. A lot of people - and a lot of journalists who should know better (and even some dealer reps!) - seem to think the Smart has an automatic transmission and it has a problem of being too slow between gears. But that's not the case at all. The Smart has a manual transmission with an automatic cluch that shifts according to an optimized high mileage program. It is marvelous and it works perfectly. It even… Continue

Ptero, do you by any chance have a picture of the exact mounting point that you used for the Ultra-Gauge? I just got mine, and can't for the life of me see exactly where you mounted the base to get the gauge where you have it shown in the picture. You'd think it would be easy? I posted a question about RPM's on your excellent, funny-as-heck review, which I will answer for myself, but would really appreciate a little bit more info, preferably a picture, about where that base goes exactly?? I'll watch that review you posted for more info:

Rick you said in one of the discussions that the underside of the smart is aerodynamically dirty.. have you looked at it? its covered in a molded plastic cover and I thought was rather clean.. the only area not so was the engine/ suspension rear but I'm assuming that is due to the moving parts and ventilation needs. what are you thoughts on this? by the way your automobile mag response was really good

This Fiat Sciento prototype which I filmed in Turin, Italy in 2003 represents the ultimate evolution of the passenger vehicle from gasoline to diesel to electric hybrid to plug-in hybrid to fuel cell hybrid.
