I am also having a gear problem. The motor turns on, but the gears will not engage some of the time. I have to turn the motor off and on again for it to work. Has anyone discovered the problem that causes this? Is it fixable? Will it be okay to go on a long trip with this nuisance? Do I need to take the car in?

It sounds like an issue with the clutch servo mechanism. Not 100% sure since we do not have the car and cannot run a check.

If you get stuck turn off the car, let is sit for a bit and it should be back to normal. This is a short term fix. Eventually you will need the item replaced otherwise you will get stuck.

We just had the exact same issue that we worked on in our shop about two weeks ago. If you are local we can help. If you are out of Southern California we can assist you with the parts needed and approximate costs. If we can help give us a buzz at 562-981-6800

Where are you located?
Hi Donna,

We're located in Southern California, Signal Hill to be exact. It's a tiny city in the middle of Long Beach. You may want to bring this up to your local dealer if you're under warranty because this should be properly addressed by them as well as remedied if you can't get to us.

Curious, does seem to happen mostly on inclines or declines, no matter how big or small?

I checked with the dealer (before they closed the San Jose dealership), they said it was some software issue and need to charge like $100+ to fix which I just passed my 20k warranty. I have not fix it yet.

Yeah.

Or you can try spraying some silicon down the gearshift.

did you change your transmition oil? if not change it and try

Hi there, Actually, I had that problem when my car was three. I put it in the shop and had the computer for transmission reprogrammed it took care of it for about a year and it is now starting to happen again. Seems to be one of the glitches that. need to be ironed out. Does anyone know of a good mechanic in Toronto or the gta....it's very hard to find someone who knows what they are doing with these cars. I love it but it is turning into a financial drain:(

I have a similar issue and am looking for a good non-dealer service location in the NYC area. Any thoughts?

thanks

Jay

i had this problem about 3 years ago in cold weather, the dealer replaced the shift lever the first time, it happened again shortly after, and they changed it again! shortly after that, i was contacted directly by dave schembri, past pres of smart USA, and he got the best smart tech in a conference call and it was decided that my brake switch wasn't sending the signal to the tranny that the brake was engaged and locked the shifter in park. a bad brake switch could be another possibility. after the ambient temperature got over a certain temp, it was fine, like when the tow truck driver showed up for the first time!
