"Snowflake" icon on instrument cluster

I was driving last night in manual mode, and a "snowflake like" symbol started flashing between my transmission position indicator and my outside temperature. It then stopped flashing after a few km, stayed solid, and then disappeared.
Anyone have any idea what it was trying to tell me? I read the manual again last night (twice) trying to figure it out.

Almost 2000 km on my smart,
Mollie, my old lab, is ticked right off about the not being allowed to ride shot gun, and I have finally got a system worked out to prevent her from climbing from the back seat into the front seat (especially when I'm gone). She is my lock smith :-). spirit, my other lab, only tried once, and figured out it wasn't worth it (but then again, she doesn't like riding shot gun, just being my seat warmer when I'm not in the car.
I ended up using a cargo net (attached at the top to the seat belt shoulder holder, and the bottom through the space between cars) and then used some plastic fencing (the cross hatch pattern) cut to fit over the hump in the middle and about 8" overlap on either side. Cargo net holds it in place. I can post pictures if someone wants to see what I created. It's been in now about a week, and mollie hasn't been able to break the barrier, and I can see through it to the back window. Now, I will just have to get a "ledge" on it so she can lean her head on it and whine at me for that front seat position. :-( (her opinion, not mine)

Smartster and Mr. Bad Example are both right. When the outside temperature is low enough (which I believe is set at 6 degrees C (43F)), the snowflake appears. There is a bit more behind this. Some EU countries have laws which require winter tires between certain dates of the year (e.g., Nov 1 - Apr 1), with the caveat that the temperature must also be below a certain temp (4 degrees C in Vienna Austria) due to the potential for black ice. So if it is Nov 15 and the temp is 3C, winter tires are required even if no snow is present; reason = black ice potential.

here's something else that isn't in the manual, when you lock the car and it bleeps/blinks 9 times, you need as new battery for your key!

I keep reading my manual almost everyday still. This car is way to "smart" sometimes for the manual. I keep discovering another feature or symbol still. Two months in - can't wait to see how air conditioning will change stuff (maybe an inside snowflake for frost on the inside of the windshield.

Thank you! I have been back and forth through the manual wondering it was for "cold weather" or "black ice". I'm loving my smart more and more!

i think it's warning of the possibility of "black ice" conditions. i'll find out soon enough, i sold my old benz today and now park my smart at my home (yippie!)

That makes sense. It was plus 12oC yesterday, and then we dropped back down to about -7oC. and most of that foot of snow we got on wed or thursday melted.... Much better than the highs of -25oc last week.
Thanks

The snowflake icon is to let you know of freezing temperature and possible ice on the road. The flashing snowflake is like a little warning and then it stays solid to just keep you posted that its damn cold outside.

This actually for me comes in a little handy, its physiological for me, I know its cold I know its icy, but that flashing item on the gauges really makes me think about it and adjust my driving a little, another smart addition to an already smart car.

Tony, You will still get a Rapid Flash since you are replacing stock bulbs with LED/SMDs since they draw less current. Give us a call at 562-981-6800 and we will be glad to assist you and go over options.

My ex bought the smart fortwo passion I now have to drive because we lived in Manhattan and for space reasons, he thought it was a good idea. For parking purposes it's actually not bad (aside from the giant blind spot). Everything else about the car…
