2010 DIESEL... US? - 451 smart fortwo

451 smart fortwo

PRESS RELEASE:

smart fortwo cdi: 21 percent more power for the CO2 champion

Stuttgart – For model year 2010 the smart fortwo cdi has been given a clear power boost, yet it remains just as economical and environmentally friendly as before. In future the state-of-the-art three-cylinder diesel engine will produce 21 percent more power and deliver approximately 18 percent more maximum torque. Although this extra power makes the popular two-seater car noticeably livelier, it does not affect its exemplary fuel consumption. As before, it consumes just 3.4 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres (NEDC). Furthermore, with CO2 emissions of 88 g/km it continues to assert its leading position as the CO2 champion. In addition, from model year 2010 all versions of the smart fortwo including the BRABUS variants will comply with the strict emission limits of the EU5 standard.

The smart fortwo enjoys the worldwide reputation of a car that is perfect for the times we live in. Thanks to its unique concept it takes up minimum road and parking space, boasts low fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions and combines mobility, ecology and joie de vivre in a unique way. For the new model year smart is uncompromisingly continuing its philosophy and making the smart fortwo even more environmentally friendly and attractive.

The most important change: the smart fortwo cdi with a length of 2.69 metres is redefining economy and driving fun. Its reengineered diesel engine now has an output of 40 kW/54 hp – seven kW or 21 percent more than its predecessor. Moreover, the new three-cylinder engine delivers maximum torque of 130 Newton metres (an increase of 18 percent). This makes the car that is brimming with lifestyle appeal even more agile and fun to drive. Thanks to the power boost it now sprints from 0 - 100 km/h in just 16.8 seconds. However, the increased liveliness does not affect the outstanding fuel consumption and emission figures of the trendy two-seater car. The combined fuel consumption still stands at 3.4 litres per 100 kilometres and the extremely low CO2 emissions of just 88 g/km mean that the smart fortwo cdi is still the CO2 world champion among all production cars with combustion engines.

The 21 percent power increase is primarily realised through modified pistons in conjunction with adjusted injection and charge pressure parameters. Furthermore, thanks to the increased torque it was also possible to lengthen the gear ratios of the third and fourth gears by ten and eleven percent respectively, and to lower the shifting points in the automatic programme. This reduces the rpm level in speed ranges used particularly frequently – with benefits in terms of fuel consumption and noise level. The smart fortwo cdi is equipped with a closed diesel particulate filter and emissions are below the limit values laid down in the EU5 standard.

Thanks to optimised engine and transmission management the petrol models of the popular two-seater car also comply with the demanding EU5 exhaust gas standard. Not only does this help the environment – in many countries it entails clear tax advantages.

New contrast components in shiny pearl black, which further upgrade the interior of the smart fortwo, and a new folding armrest available as an option, provide for increased comfort.

Further optional equipment includes the smart hands-free system with a colour display and extensive multimedia functions. It features the sassy design typical of the brand, a Bluetooth® interface, voice control and optional iPod® connection and is perfectly integrated in the vehicle electronics and the audio system. It is simple and safe to operate via a wireless controller on the centre console.

All updated smart fortwo variants can be ordered now. The prices for the petrol models are unchanged. In future the 40 kW/54 hp smart fortwo cdi will cost €11 790 as a coupé in the pure equipment line (German price incl. VAT).

my smart center stiffed me for $240 for the 10,000 mile service, i can't see how it could get much worse!

Only £124 here in the Uk which was at a Mercedes dealership.

Trust me for the three pointed star here in the Uk that is cheap.

Actually the diesel is cheaper to maintain than a gas or petrol powered Smart because generally diesels are far more reliable than gas powered vehicles due to the very high compression needed in the diesel process.

A diesel engine will outlast a gas one many times over and modern diesels now have longer service intervals.

Gas powered vehicles may be cheaper to own but diesels hold onto more of their value especially here in the Uk.

Why do diesels have "much higher maintenance requirements"? The biggest problem with diesels seems to be fuel pump failures, something that could be fixed with a bit of R & D. Also, show me a gas engine that lasts as long as a typical diesel engine.

I know that diesels should cost no more to build than gas-guzzlers except for the piddling extra cost of the metal needed to make somewhat beefier engines.

The conflation of the words "diesel" and "expensive" is a typical ploy used by the profiteers among us to dig deeper into our pockets for no good reason at all. As George once said, "it's all bullshit, and it's bad for ya".

Why do you suppose that Diesel fuel is so much more expensive in the USA than it is in Europe? More profits, more B.S.

What we have here is profiteers and thieves looking to maintain their life-styles.

i wouldn't mind a diesel... it is 4 seconds slower to 62mph than our gas version, but i bet i could get over 80mpgs out of it!
(i got 55mpgs on today's powerball run and it was quite windy and i was doing 60 instead of my usual 54-55mph)

MrB you speed demon! how the dynamat helping you out?

Reply to This

116 actually, but you have to drive it very carefully to get that sort of economy.

I manage around 90mpg in mine but i have yet to really try over a long journey.

I have only owned my little Cdi for five months so the engine is still tight.

I know 100mpg is possible because the car is so lite at around 790Kg.

I finally figured out how to get the high mileage out of my smart on the highway. It's easy, I just stopped driving 70+mph and viola 45-50 mpg lol. I guess what the epa means by highway is more like 55-60 mph not the 70mph speed limit on Florida's Turnpike. I only get around 41mpg or less at those speeds. I would love to have my smart with a diesel engine! I think it was a stupid move on their part not to make a diesel smart available in the US. One of the reasons I like diesel engines so much is that any diesel engine can be modified to run on SVO (straight Vegetable Oil) with very minor and cheap modifications. Good to have in those post apocalyptic days when fuel is hard to come by lol

Ok I gotta ask, in the last picture, what is that dial like thing she has her hand on????

Seumas, that IS the SVO ratio adjuster..... Sorry, actually its the control for the ipod connection. It will access the different files, songs, artists.. in essence "play lists" from your ipod

hmmmm well I'm not an ipoder so that feature would not get used much by me

That i think is a experimental test car.

Check out the eye drive system on the BMW 7 series and Mercedes S class.

Both cars have this same control that operates all sat/nav radio etc.

This vehicle is a German one and i'm sure the specification is certainly not standard.

The new Smart ForTwo here in the Uk has now been introduced with a superb Pioneer Sat/Nav in the same place as the radio cd.

In this photograph the sat/nav is in the clock binaccle that goes on the dashboard.

This must have been an early pre production photograph in Germany before Mercedes desided to install the Pioneer sat/nav in place of the radio cd.

It is exciting to see that the cdi smart is getting the technological attention it needs to narrow the performance the gap between itself and its gasoline consuming sibling. What I don't yet understand is the specific reason why the cdi is not sold in the US. Is our EPA afraid of it or are the struggling current auto manufacturers so worried because they don't have a legitimate competitive vehicle in their arsenal? With Daimler partnering with Tesla to have access to their battery / electric car technology, I suspect soon the all electric smart that is being tested abroad will soon be in production. Current reports indicate the electric smart would have no change in the passenger compartment to make room for the electric components. Will this car make its way to the US? I'm certain there are many possibilities for an electric smart here.

If speed or the lack there of is a factor in bringing the cdi to the US, I'd be very curious to know who it is that makes that call. I've heard that one reason the cdi didn't make the US market was because of its 0-60 MPH time at +16 seconds. I drove a '65 VW Microbus for years. Achieving 60 MPH at all was a monumental experience. I upgraded to a 76 Westfalia camper. It was stuffed with a 2.0 Porsche engine and a Borg-warner automatic tranny. I timed this baby myself on the Turnpike and it would leap to 60 MPH in +16 seconds. I drove it for well over 60,000 miles before selling it and don't recall it's acceleration being an issue. The smart is not a Porsche, a BMW or a Veyron, its a smart. I'd kill to be able to tool along at 70 MPG, even if it took a few extra seconds to get to 70 MPH. That gives me time to pick my iTunes play list while I amble down the on-ramp anyway.

See previous posts in this thread. I've been saying that for a very long time. Daimler and Smart have not supported this brand in the US and they apparently relied on viral marketing and YouTube to do all of their advertising. My Smart dealer didn't…
