that is what they will tell you. Plenty of people have complained about this and even though the car has been production for 11 years .. they still haven't figured it out.

When I called the Smart dealer service department they told me that the indicator is for either 10K or 1 yr. servicing. I had 8900 miles on my car and was a month short of the 1 year mark of having my car. I figured the indicator must have been set when the car rolled off the assembly line and it took a month to get to me.
I took my car to the Houston Smart dealer on N. I 45 in the Woodlands. The service was only $149. If I can get my car serviced for $150 a year I figure that is a real bargain! When I owned a Volvo my servicing was $500-$1000 every 3 to 4 MONTHS.

Kay, what did they DO for 149.00 dollars is more the question than just a blind comparison to the Volvo's 500 to 1000....every 3 months.... Please tell me out of curiosity what could Volvo do to your car to justify 2000 to 4000 dollars a year in "SERVICE" and you willingly paying for it???

I don't remember everything they did but it's listed in the owner's manual as the first servicing. I know they changed the oil, rotated the tires, checked the car out top to bottom to make sure everything is tight, checked all fluid levels, hoses, etc. One of the main things to me was making sure all requirements were met to maintain the warranty.

I hope your light doesn't come on anymore. I've been fighting that light coming on for a year ... and I had the oil changed and the car serviced at 5,000 miles. Of course two weeks after the servicing my tire pressure light came on and I checked the tires. All were down between 8 and 10 lbs. So, don't trust the dealership to do everything they should. I'm not hearing great things about the service folks.
For the USA 451 it is a simple task to reset the Service interval.
Turn the ignition on - Do not start the car
Press the Left Service Button twice quickly - the wrench should show
turn the ignition off - if the wrench stays your half way there
press and hold the LEFT button for 10 seconds
Turn the ignition on and again press the left button for 10 seconds a 10,000 mile indicator will come on.
my smart 4/2 won't start from one year ago becous the key fob i bought new batarey for key and for car but my car can't work if i prees remot car get 9 flasher and the gear (x) onley no (R) no (N) and(1or2) what i can do for this probloms?
The primary symptoms you describe are noted in the owner manual... see "Notes..." below.
Once the battery has been replaced, it may need to be reset..? Don't know: but assume that the key and the car need to "handshake" a security code. (You did put the key battery in the right way for polarity? And you did test the new key battery for voltage?)
Not being able to change gear... try pressing the brake pedal with the the ignition turned on, then try to change gear with the brake pedal pressed. The car may have dropped into immobiliser mode and the transmission is locked.
If all else fails, call for smartassist.
"Notes
The remote control's transmitter battery is almost spent when the turn signals flash rapidly nine times in a row when locking the vehicle. If you do not replace the transmitter battery, after about 100 more times you will no longer be able to lock or unlock the vehicle using the remote control.
> Replace the transmitter battery.
or
> Have the transmitter battery replaced at a smart center."
I tried this about 20 times or so using advice from others and i finally started trying my own variations until one worked. Those of you who have been trying for a while may want to try this because i was in the same boat which i call the frustration express.
1-turn the key to the on position and press the button on left side of spedometer twice, holding it in on the second tap.(tap quickly, sort of like your double clicking a mouse. the service indicator should be blinking even when you turn the key off)
2-turn key off while still holding the button down, release button afterwards-this was important
3-without wasting any time press and hold the same button (on left) and then quickly turn the key to the on position again. wait ten seconds and the indicator should stop flashing. the mileage indicator will say 10,000 which indicates when your next oil change is due(if that is the service that was needed)
Yes very similar to the other posts but the difference is holding it down on the second tap and releasing it after turning the key off, then pressing it again instead of just holding it down the whole time.
I found this awesome site for resetting the service indicator light....worked for me first try. https://wiki.bentleypublishers.com/display/tech/Service+Indicator+R...
