I wonder if any one can offer advice on a problem with my Smart Passion
The underside of the carpet is a thick foam and this absolutely saturated with water on the passenger and drivers side.
I know that the water is not coming in from the door seals or the windscreen and I have recently cleared a blockage from the air conditioning drain pipe. The water is somehow leaking onto the metal car floor and being absorbed by the foam underlay.
Has any one any ideas please ?
Yes I can, Its a blocked dranage tube from the aircon.. John cut the end off the tube, thasts what I did.....
If you have air conditioning fitted to your For2, it is a good idea to check the drain pipe yearly. The drain pipe is in a remote location away from grit and grime but because it is crimped to stop dirt getting in, it can block very easily.
When the drain becomes blocked, the condensed water collected by the air conditioning builds up and eventually runs into the heater vents and into the cabin. The smart carpets are quite thick and generously backed with foam so do a good job of soaking up the water.
The water doesn't go away, it just sits under the carpet. You may notice a smell, you might not. If the water is left there it will do some serious damage in the long run, apart from rusting exposed metal it will destroy the carpet.
The best course of action is to check under your carpets regularly for any moisture.
Clearing the drain
You need to remove your grill and your offside fog light (left hand as you look at the car) if you have one. With the grill removed you need to look into the fog light hole and towards the middle of the car. It's a 4' long L shaped tube.
Look carefully and you will see the drain pipe.
You will have to reach into the fog light hole and massage the pipe to ensure it's empty.

Hi Roger,
Thanks for all the info, - but a few days ago I took the front panel off the car and managed to remove a a plug of mud/dirt about 3cms long that was completely blocking the drain tube, I also inserted a 1cm length of 10mm plastic tube in the end of the drain tube to keep it open permanently. I then mopped up most of the water from the metal floor of the car and used towels to squeeze the majority of the water from the foam attached to the carpet.
However when I looked again at the floor, about 3 days later, there was obvious signs of more water coming into the car.
Any thoughts ?
Hi John.
I still think its the water coming from the air/con, when the water backs up it takes time for it all to drain out, its a pain in the a--e. I took the seats out and the carpets to get the car dried out, I know you are not having the weather to do that at the moment. I am on my 4th Smart and it happened on the first and the second on the third i cut a bit of the tube when the car arrived and never had any problems after that.
Good luck.............
Roger
Thanks Roger, it's encouraging that it took a while before it stopped leaking.
You mentioned that you removed the seats and the carpet and that's what I was planning to do next.
Did you find any links on the web that show the procedure for removing the carpet ?
One thing i did'nt ask John, was it just on the one side of the car????? I think , mine was just on the right hand side, John is your Smart left or right hand drive????
Hi Roger,
Mine is a right hand drive and the foam under the carpet was very wet on both sides and you could have squeezed the foam and water would come out. I bought the car about 18 months ago and I believe that the air con drain hose was blocked then and I first discovered the problem about 6 months ago. I took the front off the car over Christmas and I removed the 'L' shaped drain tube and removed a plug of mud/dirt about 3 centimetres long.I've now replaced the tube with about a centimetre of 10mm plastic tube in end so avoiding future blockages.
Did you remove your carpet and you could see where the water was coming into the ?
John look here:- http://evilution.co.uk/index.php?id=373 and yes I took out the carpet. Remove the seats and the frame that the seats sit on, next remove the gear lever and the surround and lift your carpet.
