Has anyone had the problem of their transmission not going into reverse? It has happened with mine six times now. The display does not indicate any letter for the gear and the transmission is not in gear. Sometimes the display indicates "N" instead of "R" and it is still not in gear. Sometimes, it does this in "D" also. If I let it sit when it is indicating "N" instead of "R", an alarm starts sounding. Any help?

They DID dismantle the entire transmission and couldn't find anything. They reported that there was no significant wear on the clutch plate (I think that's what Frank said.) But it's happened again since then. It's CLEARLY a software issue, which I bet none of the "mechanics" at the repair facility know anything about. (Similar to Toyota's problems???)

I have asked Frank to give me a promise, in writing, that this transmission issue will continue to be covered under warranty, even after my 2 years is up in August. Haven't heard back yet. If I don't get this promise....
Small claims court?
I'm trying to keep really detailed notes about the exact circumstances surrounding this problem each time it happens; I'm hoping I can figure out a pattern. If we ALL do that, perhaps we can solve this mystery and then Smart's engineers can fix the software bug.

6/20/2010 - UPDATE!
Smart Car called me and told me they wanted to install a "newer, better clutch disk", "sleeve" than my original 2008 Smart car had. So I took it in.
I've had the repair now for a couple of weeks and I've had no repeat of my problem (see above descriptions.) So perhaps this problem has been solved!
Of course I'll post if the problem resurfaces.

What is happening with your S42 now, Moon Trout? I have sent all these pages to my file and will take them to my dealer should I have a problem again...So far so good but I am hearing on here that some are still NOT fixed. I drive SASSY so little. Let me know. Thanks, JMD

Do the 2010 fortwo's have the same problem that the 2008's have or have they figured out a way to solve many of the transmission problems that the 2008's have had? I just bought my 2010 passion on May 19th, 2010.

I have a 2010 fortwo which I purchased at the end of December 2010. I also have problem with the reverse gear as follows: After shifting from park to reverse, I step on the gas and it does not reverse so I step on the brakes immediately because I thought the car was going forward instead of reversing (or maybe it was just not reversing and just not moving at all but I thought it was going forward). Then I would step on the gas pedal again and then it reverses. It has happened to me about 6 times so far. Now when I put car in reverse, I check the display to make sure it is in reverse before I step on the gas. Maybe it takes a while going from Park to Reverse or maybe it went into the Neutral gear instead of the Reverse gear. Do you have the same problem?

I heard or read some place that they changed the clutches for 2009. Is this true? It was a long time ago that I recall hearing this and this was long before I ever bought this car. I only have over 300 miles on it so far. It's a joy to drive in the city.

They performed a software upgrade to my transmission in April, 2009. I didn't notice any changes.
