We took ours through the Rockies to the BC (Canada) coast with no problem at all. Manual mode does work best.

I live in Colorado and drive through the mountains regularly. No problems at all when in the manual mode. Just shift down if you start to lose speed.

I've had my car for 1 year now and I still get the smell from the rear of the car. I don't think anything is wrong but I did think it would have stopped by now

It is normal, but i have never experienced that with other new cars. The smell can stay quite long, unfortunately.
