I found out this week that Smart now can add the daytime running lights to 08's via a software download. I just had mine installed for $70 by my dealer in Walnut Creek, Ca. This mode puts out 50% of the headlight output, and one can turn off/on the mode by clicking the unlock/high light at the same time. Nice to have this added safety feature... Apparently this is not known by all Smart dealers; if you need to contact my dealer- his number is 925-482-8740 (Hugo).
In Canada running lights are manditory, so up here everyone knows about it, but we cannot turn them off at any point without cutting engine.(government laws).
I can't tell you how much I "save" by having no choice but to run with running lights all the time. In canada, any new vechiles past about 1990 must have running lights hard wired in. So, as soon as my engine is running, I have my headlights on. At night, in order to see the inside display, I turn on my "low beams" to get the inside dash lighted. As far as I can tell, turning on or off the "low beams" does not affect the brightness of my headlights, but if there is a difference, I'll have to take a light meter out and check one day.
Again, canadian smarts are required by law to have running lights on all the time.
Although, I have to agree with Dan, just turning on low beams.... However that 50% has me thinking...
Does running lights on, off, or 50% improve the overall mileage (km age)? I cann't compare as I do not have the option. Would be interesting to see?
Anyone out there willing to drive a month with no running lights and record milage, and then drive a month with running lights? I don't think there would be a significant difference, but then again, 0.1 km/L difference could drop the smart even closer to that 5.2 km/L or lower....
my dealer said quite a few owners called about this and he said he never heard of it. So i gave him your dealers number and he"s going to check it out to see if it can be done. I"ll let you know what his response is when he gets back to me.
thks for the info,
