Have I been sleeping? I saw Breathless Performance' site selling a kit, starting this month, including a Garrett turbo & their exhaust for less than $3,000 !
Thanks Cisco, I guess I haven't been on that site in a while either. Garrett shows the GT 20 application for a larger engine than ours. I assume Speed Force Stage 1 is the GT 15. I wonder if I'll be able to wreck the engine before the warranty is up with the GT 20. On the other hand, I had a client in last night who builds rails & his son gets 1400 HP out of a Saab block.
The engine is not the weak link. The tranny-clutch pack will go BOOM way before you find a fault with the engine. So far I've found nothing stronger that will fit. I've raced 2.2 chrysler turbo engines for over 25 years-so Im kind of used to finding the next weak spot. In drag race form I'm making 1500hp out of a 2.2L 16valve maserati head motor with 28lbs of boost.
First-it's my wifes car. You married guys know what that means. I get comments every day that it's too loud with the Thorley exhaust. I've done the exhaust-a K&N drop in filter and thats it. I don't feel like constantly doing a clutch/tranny job because of 3lbs of boost with a turbo. The car is what it is and I love it. It IS NOT an Evo or WRX-ti. Never will be.
Same reason for not doing ECU ? There was a Porsche in the slot this car sits in.....so the options are the smart (tons 'o fun, sluggish) or a 5 cyl Volvo SUV (advertised heavily as "safe", rear wheel bearings failed at 24,000 mi., and not tons 'o fun!)....or mom's Murano.......so you can see why I might be tempted to do something stupid, but appreciate the reasons not to
It sounds great with the Brabus factory exhaust. The power and acceleration is fine for the size of the car. Very smooth and fun to drive. I don't plan on doing anything that could shorten the life of the clutch or transmission. When I want to go nuts I just get in my SS 427, and that gives me the fix I need. The car was made to be economical, and was never meant to be a true sports car you can beat on and get away with it. Not even the Brabus version. A little more HP is fine, but there are limits. I don't want to find the weak link, it's to costly. There's no need to try to make it something that it Isn't.
Do you notice a difference with the gearchange in the brabus? I found it even quick, but a little more herky then, the normal 451. Maybe it was an exception, but it was less smooth.
Great information, Susan. I was a little worried about getting my Smart through the drifts next winter. It snowed the day I picked mine up and by the next morning the road in front of my driveway was a giant snowdrift. I tried to back into the one t…
I'm very sorry that Max got hurt but I'm also glad you chose to post this. I live in a city where rednecks in SUV's and trucks abound. Combine that with the incessant texting and phone chatter and you've got a bad mix. It's great to know that my (as…
The rear wheels will be delivered to a fellow smartie this weekend. So ...
The 2 fronts are now available as spares ... or ... has anyone considered doing a smart Low-Rider? Replace those wide rear wheels / tires with the skinny fronts and become a…
