The engine light came on after we fill the car with fuel this afternoon. I have read on other forms that topping off your gas tank or leaving the fuel cap loose will cause the engine light to come on. Some owners took the car to there dealers for repair and some remove the ground lead on the battery which remove the engine light. We have put 50 miles on the car since I remove the ground cable and the lite has not come back on.
i've been topping off my tank since new, i crossed over 1600 miles this week and have not seen a warning light so far. i usually get 1/4 to 1/3 gallon more in on each fill. tomorrow i'll fill up again, got 200 miles on the current tank with 3/8's left. i'll probably order a scan gauge in may, after i pay the smart loan off. my 6 week temp job, now on month 8 looks to go on for another 3 months. a scan gauge is supposed to clear all check engine alerts. (it seems like they cram a lot of crap in the passenger footwell, flat repair kit, battery, etc...)
i know RPMs, i'm curious of engine load, coolant temp, mpg's and stuff like that. scan gauge admits to a one second update time, which is useless as an "active tachometer". it's nice to know the computer will shut down the AC when coolant hits 239F (i was bored and actually read the 300+ page manual) so i guess i'm an ultra smarty smart. i just want trip computer functions, coolant temp, engine loads to help improve my milage.
BTW... where did you mount your display?

I temporarily mounted it to the left of the steering wheel, where the sun glasses case goes. My sun glasses are too wide for that space so its not in use. Its not a permanent site because I'm going to try a couple of places before I start drilling holes in my smarty!... That location gives me view of only the two right side monitors.. there are 4, top left and right, also bottom left and right. Now you can assign any function to any corner.. tr, tl, br, bl.. So I put rpms in the TR and mpg in BR. those are the most useful driving. The other two I randomly assign Volts, manifold intake temp.. throttle %, ect. its fun to see the cars inner specs at work.
Were is the OBDII cable location that you plugged your scan gage into? After reading your post and mr. bad examples I order one online this afternoon. It would be nice to call the service department with a fault code from the scan gage rather then driving 400 miles round trip to find out the engine light was no big deal. Thanks.....
Mark the obdii cable plugs into a port that is hidden behind a small cover in line with your accelerator padal and your knee. If you sit in the drivers seat and run your fingers down the Knee restraint (the clothed belly of the dash) right after it ends in line with the accelerator pedal you will feel a tab kind of like the protruding tab of the gas lid... once you find it get out of the car, kneel and you will see the little lid under there. its a little hard to click open but once you do you will see it just hangs straight down. you plug your scan guge in, and its almost ready to go.
Thanks for the pic. Is there a panel screw missing to the right side of the opening?
I'm hooked... found the US ScanGauge web site. They don't ship Internationally, but they have a link to Aussie distributors; one of whom has a web order system. May have a 'Gauge in the next few days and then be wondering where the port on the Subaru is.... canna wait for ma smart to be built.
Have you had a chance to verify the trip and mpg readouts yet?
OMG Thanks a million for the instructions and picture! I've had my scan gauge for awhile, then got injured (broken elbow, ankle, and heel). I'm still in a leg cast and just tried to find where to plug it in. I can hobble back into the garage and install it -- since my hubby won't do it for me. He didn't want me to buy the gauge. He'll be surprised how nice it is once I get it in.
