PRESS RELEASE:

smart fortwo cdi: 21 percent more power for the CO2 champion

Stuttgart – For model year 2010 the smart fortwo cdi has been given a clear power boost, yet it remains just as economical and environmentally friendly as before. In future the state-of-the-art three-cylinder diesel engine will produce 21 percent more power and deliver approximately 18 percent more maximum torque. Although this extra power makes the popular two-seater car noticeably livelier, it does not affect its exemplary fuel consumption. As before, it consumes just 3.4 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres (NEDC). Furthermore, with CO2 emissions of 88 g/km it continues to assert its leading position as the CO2 champion. In addition, from model year 2010 all versions of the smart fortwo including the BRABUS variants will comply with the strict emission limits of the EU5 standard.

The smart fortwo enjoys the worldwide reputation of a car that is perfect for the times we live in. Thanks to its unique concept it takes up minimum road and parking space, boasts low fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions and combines mobility, ecology and joie de vivre in a unique way. For the new model year smart is uncompromisingly continuing its philosophy and making the smart fortwo even more environmentally friendly and attractive.

The most important change: the smart fortwo cdi with a length of 2.69 metres is redefining economy and driving fun. Its reengineered diesel engine now has an output of 40 kW/54 hp – seven kW or 21 percent more than its predecessor. Moreover, the new three-cylinder engine delivers maximum torque of 130 Newton metres (an increase of 18 percent). This makes the car that is brimming with lifestyle appeal even more agile and fun to drive. Thanks to the power boost it now sprints from 0 - 100 km/h in just 16.8 seconds. However, the increased liveliness does not affect the outstanding fuel consumption and emission figures of the trendy two-seater car. The combined fuel consumption still stands at 3.4 litres per 100 kilometres and the extremely low CO2 emissions of just 88 g/km mean that the smart fortwo cdi is still the CO2 world champion among all production cars with combustion engines.

The 21 percent power increase is primarily realised through modified pistons in conjunction with adjusted injection and charge pressure parameters. Furthermore, thanks to the increased torque it was also possible to lengthen the gear ratios of the third and fourth gears by ten and eleven percent respectively, and to lower the shifting points in the automatic programme. This reduces the rpm level in speed ranges used particularly frequently – with benefits in terms of fuel consumption and noise level. The smart fortwo cdi is equipped with a closed diesel particulate filter and emissions are below the limit values laid down in the EU5 standard.

Thanks to optimised engine and transmission management the petrol models of the popular two-seater car also comply with the demanding EU5 exhaust gas standard. Not only does this help the environment – in many countries it entails clear tax advantages.

New contrast components in shiny pearl black, which further upgrade the interior of the smart fortwo, and a new folding armrest available as an option, provide for increased comfort.

Further optional equipment includes the smart hands-free system with a colour display and extensive multimedia functions. It features the sassy design typical of the brand, a Bluetooth® interface, voice control and optional iPod® connection and is perfectly integrated in the vehicle electronics and the audio system. It is simple and safe to operate via a wireless controller on the centre console.

All updated smart fortwo variants can be ordered now. The prices for the petrol models are unchanged. In future the 40 kW/54 hp smart fortwo cdi will cost €11 790 as a coupé in the pure equipment line (German price incl. VAT).

It is exciting to see that the cdi smart is getting the technological attention it needs to narrow the performance the gap between itself and its gasoline consuming sibling. What I don't yet understand is the specific reason why the cdi is not sold in the US. Is our EPA afraid of it or are the struggling current auto manufacturers so worried because they don't have a legitimate competitive vehicle in their arsenal? With Daimler partnering with Tesla to have access to their battery / electric car technology, I suspect soon the all electric smart that is being tested abroad will soon be in production. Current reports indicate the electric smart would have no change in the passenger compartment to make room for the electric components. Will this car make its way to the US? I'm certain there are many possibilities for an electric smart here.

If speed or the lack there of is a factor in bringing the cdi to the US, I'd be very curious to know who it is that makes that call. I've heard that one reason the cdi didn't make the US market was because of its 0-60 MPH time at +16 seconds. I drove a '65 VW Microbus for years. Achieving 60 MPH at all was a monumental experience. I upgraded to a 76 Westfalia camper. It was stuffed with a 2.0 Porsche engine and a Borg-warner automatic tranny. I timed this baby myself on the Turnpike and it would leap to 60 MPH in +16 seconds. I drove it for well over 60,000 miles before selling it and don't recall it's acceleration being an issue. The smart is not a Porsche, a BMW or a Veyron, its a smart. I'd kill to be able to tool along at 70 MPG, even if it took a few extra seconds to get to 70 MPH. That gives me time to pick my iTunes play list while I amble down the on-ramp anyway.

So, what will the 54 hp diesel cost in the USA? It seems that 16.8 seconds to 100 kph is way too slow. Are we being low-balled again? The VW Golf Diesel with the 1900cc engine was a good deal faster than their 2-liter gasser. Isn't someone at Smart using the old 700CC gas engine acceleration figure? Find that idiot and fire him/her - please!

Incorrect performance figures have been a running problem with the Smart brand, but there's one thing I know for sure: I have a bike that will blow away even the Bugatti Veyron, and it cost me just $6450 USD, used. Go to your Suzuki dealer and ask to test-ride a Bandit 1255 (gets 47 mpg, highway). If this is too slow, try a Hayabusa. I bought a Smart because I needed the extra garage space for my bikes. Hey, Roger, do you dig that?

since i've been sorta "banned" from the "official" smart website (smartusainsider) i can take 2 sticks and poke them firmly into roger's eyes here. penske is a dipshit! if he had any balls, they are surely shriveled and quite small! any smart diesel is cleaner than any gas burning piece of $#!t on the roads of north america!

now that global warming has been proven to be a "man made farce", we should see many more diesels here very soon, as soon as we boot that DAMNED Kenyan out of OUR White House!

I have a 1986 toyota pickup, with the 22r engine in it, completely stock. I had my daughter drive with me to see how long it would take to go from 0-60. 18 seconds! My '09 smart is faster, I could deal with the 16.8 second diesel smart easily. If it was available when I bought my smart I would of bought the diesel version.

Ditto's on the White House comment Mr Bad.

my metro took 19 seconds to hit 60 and was scarey as hell when merging, especially when an A-hole with a 6 or 8 goes slow until the last second and punches it, then you're stuck at 30mph while everyone else is doing 60!

I hate that! I have that done to me almost every day! Makes my smart look slower than it actually is. Why do people not understand that you have to at least match the speed of the traffic you are trying to merge in to in order to do it safely and efficiently!

Interesting thread; started in July and still going strong. Let's go over to smartusa.com and configure one of those diesel fortwos - oops, not available. Weren't available in July and won't be available in the USA, period. Dave Schembri has confirmed this several times. We can "what if" this to death but the CDI ain't coming to the USA. Nor is the "real" Brabus, nor the fortwo 84 (Pulse.)

Say, WHAT? No cdi? Damn! It's what I wanted all along since test-driving a CDI in Frankfurt 10 years ago! Looks like VW is going to get my future business (@#$%@#$).Unfortunately, I can't stand their proprietary B.S., their insane pricing for maintenance, their "impossible" maintenance demands, should you decide to maintain your own car.

We're hardly stupid here in the land of round door-knobs, but Germans have always arrogantly believed that those of their own population who have moved west somehow lost all their brain-power. Sheesh! Who do you think knocked off the British Army during the Revolutionary War? Yes, we-uns done did introduced rifled gun barrels.

Shembi, eh? Not a German name, is it? You have to understand the desires of your market, Mr, Shembi!
