- I first saw the smart in Rome (Italy...not Georgia or New York) in 2000. At that time I thought it would be a great vehicle for running errands in town. When the opportunity came to put down a deposit I leapt at the chance. Our current vehicles include a 1985 Porsche 928S with 127,000 miles on it (my car..and I love it) and a 1997 GMC Yukon with 136,000 miles on it. Porsche no longer makes the 928, and the Yukons are no longer offered with cargo doors and without a 3rd row seat so we do not want to trade. The smart offers economical utility for two retirees, and gives us a third vehicle when the others are in the shop.
As it turns out, 4 days after taking delivery of our smart, the timing belt either broke or slipped on my 928. I'm still waiting to get the bad news, but expect to pay Big Bucks to repair the engine.
