Well, now we know that the smart has arrived in Southern California. Just after taking my "medicine", I looked up at the big screen, and had to rub my tired eyes. Another high-speed chase! But HEY! They are chasing a smart!! I rubbed and blinked again, and, yep it's a smart! What was particularly funny was, the helicopter pilot shooting the chase was our own Derek Bell - a smart owner. Hopefully the footage will show up somewhere, because although quietly proud, Derek did a great job of relaying information about our remarkable little car. Cowabunga,man.

Take note of the line:
"They abandoned the chase altogether when they determined who the driver was and where he lived, said officials. "
It's not too difficult to track down a smart. Good news: if someone steals a smart, they will probably be noticed. Bad news: do something un-smart and you will probably get caught.
BTW: with the speedo "error" if anyone claims to do a 100 mph, have it checked with a GPS. Good chance most fortwos will indicate a speed higher than the limited cutoff.

How do you know if your smart dealer is a Penske dealer, or an independent dealer ? Is there a list somewhere ?

The car was modified and had colored front headlights. That was the clew who it was.

Forgot how a good chase gets a good laugh no and then... friend that is in the CHP thought it was odd.
