If hitch is in back of the filter, it will certainly protect it while backing up, but not while moving forward.

I finally got around to taking a pic of the hitch, and how it would protect a larger oil filter.<br />

yeah, probably putting a bigger load on the engine @4250rpms, wind resistance increases at the square of the speed, the smart is loafing along at 3000rpms @ 60mph, that's why the smart gets over 50mpgs @ 55mph on a level road and drops to the high 30's @ 75mph. i'll have to check engine loads at different speeds with my SG2, i usually have it monitoring RPMS GPH coolant temp and MPG. i rarely exceed 60mph in my daily commutes and my avg speeds are between 23-35mph for my trips.

In the Horsepower Comparison Chart below you will see that the Smart recommended Mobil 0 W-40 is the smart oil for your Smart...<br />

Note: I changed my Mobil 0 W-40 oil at 5000 miles because it was Black (carbon~fuel & Oil by-products), and oil analysis test said it had sheared to 0 W-30 (all oil shears)... That told me its coming out... I will change my oil every 5000 miles... NOT Smart's Recommended 10,000... A smart engine is a hard working "Little Thumper"... Maybe my 85 MPH on the Free-Way is Hard Working...???<br />
I also put the Mobil Oil Filter for the Smart on to, because its rated better than the Stock Smart Filter... I bought it all at Advance Auto Parts...<br />

So a bit bigger, and I would like to add that I have installed a Hitch on my SMART, and the hitch does a great job of protecting the oil filter, motor, and other bits. So, if the bigger filter concerns you, put a hitch on.

"if road debris poked a hole into a filter that is much closer to the ground "..<br />
<br />
It can happend to ANY size of filters. But I never see it happend yet even a single time.<br />
<br />
I just don't like how the original filter looks like. It's way to small. I live in San Diego and we have no snow here, and we do have here a very nice roads and freeways.

I have done many changes of oil and filter on my smarts...I do it @ the 1,200 - 1,500 range for the first one and go about 5,000 after that. I let one go to 7,500 to see what the oil looked like and was not happy. Will stick with 5,000 mile intervals.<br />

<i><b>I use only, ONLY smart original equipment filters</b></i>. They are made by Mitsu, the engine manufacturer, look VERY high grade to me, and cost $12. If I do 3 to 4 oil changes on my daily driver smart (18,000 mi/yr) and 1 or 2 oil changes on my newest smart that I intend to save and upgrade, I will have saved about $36 per year as opposed to non-smart filters. $36 bucks JUST AIN'T worth the trouble that a gypsy brand filter could cause. How would you like to have your car towed to the dealer with no oil pressure and try to explain why you used sub-standard parts?...ESPECIALLY if road debris poked a hole into a filter that is much closer to the ground than the tiny Mitsu one. You'd be like: "Uhhh, the Honda filter looked prettier 'cause its blue!"<br />

By the way, Mr. Bad...skip spending the money on beer and go back on your meds...
